Cars for £1! Real or fake?

in #money7 years ago

As an 18 year old girl, I've recently been taking some driving lessons. What I want more than anything right now is my own car, however my part time job just isn't going to cover the costs. Therefore I took to the internet to look for some cheap deals on second hand cars. And that's when I found this website...

http://www.motors.co.uk/car-42756896/?m=srp

The website is called motors.co.uk and it sells second hand cars for a variety of prices. There is an option to set the prices of these cars from low to high, enabling you to easily see the cheapest cars that are available. Being the broke student that I am, naturally I wanted to find the best and cheapest deal that I could. So I clicked on the button... and this is what came up :

Ok, so it might not be the most modern or attractive car in the world... but guess what the selling price was. £1! You're probably thinking what I'm thinking: this can't be real, it must be some sort of scam. In an ideal world, I'd like to hand over my bank details and the company would simply transfer a pound out of my account and then I'd get the car. However I have a feeling that it's not that simple. It hardly seems worth it, going to the effort of selling your car for just a pound! You may as well give it away FOR FREE. I think i've come to the conclusion that the car must not work at all, or there must be some other catch to it. Who knows, maybe it's not even a real car. I guess I'll never know, as I don't want to risk it and try to find out. I thought that this was quite amusing however, which is why I've decided to share it with you on Steemit. Let me know of your thoughts and opinions on this website and the £1 cars.

Anything selling for that cheap either must have something wrong with it which needs fixing (at great expense) or be extremely uneconomical and expensive to run

Yeah that's true. It just doesn't seem worth selling it if it's just for a pound!

It's probably because £1 is the minimum amount they're allowed to list them for on the site

i´m very much into cars and all of these are definately worth way more than a pound...even if their engine wasn´t even working. okay, the jaguar (1st one) is not so expensive to buy, atleast in germany, because, you got it, they are not the most beautiful, not the most technically advanced and not the most efficient, but still they are worth SOMETHING. so ask yourself, why would someone gift you something expensive for free?(1 pounds is nearly free lol) maybe it´s an auction-type offer and the starting price is 1 bucks... you can message them and ask why the price and condition of the car etc, but mostly likely this would be a scam attempt.

here in germany, you can get a working condition small car with road safety inspection done for low as 500 euro, IF YOU ARE LUCKY...
i don´t know the details of buying a car in UK, tho.
find someone to help you with that (parents, friends, friends parents, someone who works as a mechanic etc)

i know that feel, 10 years ago i was feeling exactly the same :(
well, cars do cost a ton of money, even the small ones. buying it, insuring it (maybe expensive for new drivers), servicing/repairing it ( huuuuge position on old cars most of the time) and then the things you have to buy regularly on ever car like gas, brakes, tires etc.

well, you gotta get that hustle going and get more money and save up for a nice car that you love and which won´t give up on you. It´s hard to find a car in good condition for a reasonable price.

Another thing on used cars: i personally (!) would try to avoid cars after the early 2000s, there are many types of cars from the 90s that have proven an incredible reliability over the past up to 3 decades, this may sound strange, but in this era of car manufacturing, they werent optimizing everything for maximum profit, in special the german and japanese ones. the goal was reliability, not 100 bucks more profit per car. on the other side, newer cars in general are way more safe, but they have more complicated technical and so more expensive stuff inside. more expensive shit that can break...

i also recommend to do a road safety course, before you are going to drive.
again, i can speak only for germany here, drivers license is a huge thing and takes quite a time to get here, but you only learn the very basics, which is enough if nothing happens, but there are so many dumbfucks on the road who put your life on danger everyday! i did these and i describe myself and did so before, as a confident and safe, even advanced driver. but in these courses you learn to react and handle your car in critical situations, eg when youre about to or have already lost the control of the car! driving school doesnt tell that to you most of the time. i know how people react when somthing happens they dont expect on the road. i know a girl who totally over reacted for what COULD HAVE BEEN some animal of the side of the road in the night while i was on her left side with my car (2-lane road), nearly rammed me off if i would not have slammed the the brakes at 100km/h + and many people are afraid to do that, because they don´t know how thier car will react. we both had a passenger at this time, 4 peoples life on the line for "some small eyes" she saw in the grass on the side of the road... people whill react poor on the streets and then it´s your turn to decide and react in a fraction of a second maybe.

i dont wann a get you afraid, just aware. you always have to know whats happening around you and react properly, also, your car needs to react properly, so it´s not a good advice to buy the cheapest you can get.

you also have to make a proper test drive or take someone with you, who knows how a car should react at certain things, like fast direction changes or emergency brakings. Safety tech your car SHOULD have: ABS,Airbags,ESP (in this particular order, and since i think youre in the uk: foglights ;). don´t be afraid to ask for more advice or even technical things

Thankyou so much for telling me all this. This is actually really useful as I don't know much about cars myself and really have no idea where to start looking when buying. I feel as if I can look forward a little more confidently after reading this. Thanks so much :)

you´re welcome ;)
the car world is huge and colourful, have fun!

Scam, don't get caught up!

Yeah think i'll avoid it. Thanks :)

People do this for the exact reason you have just done, you have sorted the cars from low price to high if you swap it round the other way there will be some stupidly priced cars at the higher end !

That's very true. I might have a look and see what the most expensive ones are, just out of curiosity>
