Monero and Zcoin mining on the $128 i3 8100 cpu
I was interested in what the 8th generation i3 8100 could achieve mining two popular CPU mineable coins Monero and Zcoin. Keep in mind the new i3 8100 has four physical cores as compared to old generations that had 2 physical cores and four threads.
The above hash rate is from Monero using three cores, anything more or less than three cores achieved poor results. This will not make anyone rich, but its a nice way to use a modern inexpensive CPU to dabble in the cryptocurrency mining world.
The next hash rate above is what I was able to achieve from mining Zcoin with all four cores it managed to mine at speeds close to what a Nvidia GTX 1050 achieves.
The I3 8100 is a nice processor and more comparable to a 7th generation i5 with four cores and a 65 watt TDP. I do recommend getting an aftermarket cooler if you do want to mine with it though. The stock cooler leaves something to be desired if you put long term stress on it from mining.

No profit at long term...
Exactly, its more for people who just want to experiment with mining and maybe get their feet wet in a low cost way.
i think this processor will be good for gaming... At this days maybe only GPU can give you some profit. I have different friends wth GPU rigs on monero...
Thanks for doing this, profit seems very very poor. My i7 laptop gets around the same hashrate and its basically un-useable.
No problem, was surprised to see someone comment on such an old post of mine. :)
Haha, yeah unfortunately I bought a Z370 motherboard which only supports the new chips. I was looking at seeing if i would be able to mine monero with it, but it does not look like a profitable option for me :(
great analysis,thanks for sharing
thanks @azfix
Glad it helped
