Monday Motivation - Identity

I am convinced that I am getting to know people much better on Steemit than on any other social media. I love reading your thoughts and often get the feeling that if I were ever to meet you irl we would have lots to talk about.

But however many things we have to talk about and whether we converse in cyberspace or on a road trip with nothing else to do, it is difficult to get to know anyone for real, is it not? It takes a lot of work. And time. And effort. And it takes someone who is willing to open up and show you who they are.

For someone to be able to show you who they are, they first need to know who they are themselves.

Do you know who you are?

Henry Nouwen writes about five lies regarding identity. Conclusions that we come to about who we are that are completely false.

  1. I am what I have.
  2. I am what I do.
  3. I am what other people say or think of me.
  4. I am nothing more than my worst moment.
  5. I am nothing less than my best moment.

I know you can see how these conclusions can be wrong and it will be easy just to say, 'That is not me!' However, I want to ask that you take a bit of time and test yourself very carefully.

As you do this, I want to share the words of a song by Israel Houghton with you. This expresses how I find my identity. You may find yours in a different way and I'm not writing this to convince you of my approach. Just to share it with you. And to say that while your identity should not be based on the things listed above, it should also not just be based on what you find inside yourself. Our identity has a source and we need to make sure it is a good source.

I know who I am
I know who I am
I know who I am
I am yours
I am yours (2x)

And you are mine
Jesus you are mine
You are mine
Jesus you are mine

I was running, and you found me
I was blind, and you gave me sight
You put a song of praise in me
I was broken, and you healed me
I was dying, and you gave me life
Lord, You are my identity

I am forgiven, I am your friend
I am accepted, I know who I am
I am secure, I'm confident
That I am loved, I know who I am
I am alive, I am set free
I belong to you and you belong to me

Do you know who you are? Spend some time this week testing your knowledge. I know I am going to.

love this post of yours my friend

Our identity has a source and we need to make sure it is a good source. << so true!

Number 2 especially. I love how you said that one because I had to learn that one! It's soooo easy to fall into that one especially, I think. If you don't do something amazing, it's hard to feel like you're enough.

I even have to remind myself of that sometimes even after learning it

That's really insightful advice. As I read those things about identity I breathed a sigh of relief. We are our own worst critics and we must learn to love and forgive ourselves. Thanks for this.

thanks for sharing how you define and identify yourself. to each their own.
