Marathakkali....

Marathakkali :This pictures are captured by me when I visited Munnar. Here it is used to call as seemathakkali and also marathakkali.

This tree is known as Tamarillo. It's grows up to five meters .Start to give fruits in four years. Life expectancy is about twelve years. Leaves are large and look simple with a pungent smell. Flowers and fruits hang from the lateral branches. The fruits are egg-shaped., Which is about four to ten centimeters. They have a dark purple color longitudinal stripes. And you see various colors of this fruits like red, orange, yellow and purple. Taste of this fruit is similar to Tomato. Earlier this tree is called as Tree Tomato. This tree has various names like Tree and in, tree tomamoro, tomatoes de arbor etc in South America. It is best known as Tamarillo for its egg shaped edible fruits. Yellow and orange fruits are sweeter than the red fruit. You can scoop and eat the fruits. Here we use this fruits for making chutney. People of Munnar believes that consuming these fruits helps to cure Piles. These fruits are high in Vitamins and iron and low in Calories.
