HOSPICE: a brief guide to understanding hospice
End of life will be a personal experience for all of us and most of us will be faced with the end of life and life limiting illness of a loved one.
Here is an example of a situation I dealt with today. A patient in ICU is admitted with cardiac issues. He has severe metastatic prostate cancer. His bones are riddled with prostate cancer and he is constant agony and pain. In the course of his work up the find several spots on his liver and he gets a liver biopsy. Five days later the biopsy results come back as colon cancer. The oncologist gives him great hope of treatment and extending his life. Palliative care team gives him great hope of a comfortable, well cared for end of life management program. The patient stoically chose home hospice. For the first time in days I saw him content.
From the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
"Considered to be the model for quality, compassionate care for people facing a life-limiting illness or injury, hospice care involves a team-oriented approach to expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient's needs and wishes. Support is provided to the patient's loved ones as well. At the center of hospice and palliative care is the belief that each of us has the right to die pain-free and with dignity, and that our families will receive the necessary support to allow us to do so. "
Did you know that under Hospice Care you are not only allowed but encouraged to get therapy if it improves your quality of life. Physical therapy is such an example.
Hospice Care addresses the needs of the patient but also addresses the situation of the loved ones and the family. It cares for the medical needs as well as the spiritual needs. The dreaded pain that often accompanies such situations is very expertly treated. Hospice provides dignity of life which is deserved by those who get terminally ill.
The time to look into this option for someone you care about and who is nearing the end of his life is before they get to that point where you have to make decisions on the spur of the moment .

What is your professional profession. I had a job once setting caregivers up with hospice patients. Upvote.
I am a pulmonary medicine doc, a critical medicine doc, a internal medicine doc and a diving medical officer.
That sounds to me like a lot of school. I hope you find a good outlet and a home to share your knowledge on Steemit! Good luck, I look forward to future articles.
May I ask a favor? Every time I post I should use the first tag as minnowsupportproject??? Does it automatically get promoted to minnowsupportgroup? I just became a member about an hour ago and I have no idea what to do next . Help me understand that some of the better if you can take a moment
