I tried to join, but the apps and instructions assume a higher level of knowledge about operating the computer than I have.

Why would you feel stupid for trying? I found it quite difficult as well at first not knowing where to look for info and what to do. Give it a breather, join our Discord channel when it's a bit more quiet, and we will gladly guide you through the registration :)
