Accidents In Nigeria

It is really very alarming and indeed noticeable in the news obituary arising from accidents. Today, we read 10 died, 15 injured, in a crash. Tomorrow, we heard another 20 injured, 5 died in car accidents

This is most disturbing. And end must be put to accidents. If it is not totally possible to avoid, there must be a very drastic decrease in the frequency or the occurrence of accidents.

I therefore, which to make some observations. I would want to suggest that all vehicle owners should try to service their vehicles very regularly.

They should ensure very good if not perfect, mechanical condition of their vehicles: good and effective brakes, good tyres, clear wind screens and two not one clear head lights for use at night.

If the mechanical conditions of vehicles are perfectly alright, Check at random without notice by the police patrol officers, no doubt, the frequency of accidents shall definitely reduce.

However, accidents are caused by reckless driving.

Many drivers are used to driving at top speed, exceeding very often the normal speed limit which they have now reduced to nothing but a mockery.

It is common place to find many drivers, driving carelessly, recklessly and furiously after taking much alcohol.

They should be constantly reminded of the driving slogan: IF YOU DRIVE DON'T DRINK AND IF YOU DRINK DON'T DRIVE. Drinking and driving should not go together. To this end, I would be glad if the driving control unit of the police can introduce the use of BREATHALYSERS.

An instrument which has been devised in the Scandinavian country of Europe for measuring, when a driver breathes into it, the level of alcoholic drink shall be detected.

This suggestion, if adopted, shall be found most useful in checking drunkenness among the drivers. After all, a philosopher has put it so well: DRUNKENNESS IS TEMPORARY MADNESS. Consequent upon this, vehicles should not engage in overloading of both persons and loads, this may go a long way to throw a vehicle out of balance resulting into accidents and death of innocent and promising citizens.

While observing all these suggestion above, road users, drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrian and cab drivers should try to obey all traffic rules and regulations to all other road users.

Every driver should drives very consciously and most carefully. I am very optimistic that if all suggestions itemised above are accepted by all and put into practice, on timely deaths causing untold sorrows to many family shall be reduced to the barest minimum.
