Making Steemit better a minnow at a time (XXIV) - User and Investor Retention - Some Ideeas

in #minnows6 years ago
Hello dear Minnows,

I have set myself a goal to welcome at least 5 new Minnows a day. I choose the one from the #tag #introduceyourself. Unfortunately, I have seen in the last few days was few where I said that these accounts are real and have potential. Of course, I was too picky because you should at least try to help the people who are real and show them what to do better.

I will continue that and welcome at least 5 minnows a day. At the same time, I will report a lot of fake accounts to Steemcleaners. Only like this can Steem grow properly and it is our duty to do so to keep it clean. Many new accounts with potential are lost because they feel disappointed.

There are a lot of great projects like @welcoming that greets new accounts and votes as well. But it is a single man project and he needs support. Each of us can look once a day at #introduceyourself and leave a comment with a vote. But please do not look at trending but look at new. It matters a lot, trust me.

Once the biggest trouble on Steem is the new users will not stay long and go back to Instagram or Facebook. You do not earn anything there anyway, but you feel better because you get likes. I can not say if they are good for hunger because I have to buy bread with money and I would like to ask you to tell me when a Like Shop is opened to exchange these likes.

My question for today is how can we retain more users on Steem? There are so many on medium. Is it maybe because Medium is easier to use? These are things that we normal users can not change. We can only help the new ones integrate, welcome and respond to their questions. The new users have to understand that it is not easy to win here very fast and fast. Steem also needs investors who buy the Vests. Without them, Steem would have no value. And here comes my new question, how can we bring more investors who would like to stay here longer?

Both are important to the Steem ecosystem. New users and investors. They live in a symbiosis that is very hard to see at the beginning. You can not force investors to vote or even vote, we should understand that.

What do you think about the topic? What ideas do you have to motivate new users and how would you bring investors to Steem?

Hallo liebe Minnows,

Yes I agree that we must retain more users, but I think it might be a little more complex than just about the rewards. Anyone who thinks they are going to get rich quick on anything are usually a little naive.

I recently wrote about how the Steemit sign up time is too long. Too long as where I live there are loads of travelers and I share all things Steem with them. Steemit isn't as simple as signing up and writing posts. A little guidance and training helps so so much. Therefore opening new users interest and knowledge gain. This extra effort, usually means they will use the platform more. But by the time they get their account, they are long gone and no one to help them out. Opportunity lost.

Here in Lobitos, Peru, I am upvoting everyone local who posting. Now everyone upvotes each other and that certainly drives motivation to be on. Then over time I explain the amount of Steem or SBD collected is far more important in the long term. This over the short term $ value.

Also I think we are a little too impatient nowadays.

I find it also as at the top issue for Steem growth the long wainting period for an account. It is a mess. I see a loads of scammers getting in, but a load of potential interesting names that manage to get registered, never post because they've lost interest. This is sadly an issue that you and me can't change at the moment.

What we can change is to make the new ones feel welcome. And yes, patience is a virtue that we all need to learn how to use and master it. I'm also very optimistic about the long term value of Steem, not only as a currency, but also as a blockchain.

Thank you for your comment

I know nothing about running a community or how to keep people here at all. I guess it's more about the users ambition and mentality of what Steem actually is. Most people when they explain steem is somewhere along the lines of: "you can post things on the network, like facebook, and when people comment and like your post it generates money."

But what isn't explained is that it's hard to actually make something of yourself on this platform unless you are actively posting and being involved with the community. What needs to be explained is that Steem is a social platform like facebook, twitter, instagram and many more ideas we haven't created yet. It's about making human connections rather than technical analysis. It's about making a name for yourself not about making money.

In doing so, how can we keep users on the platform?
We would need to give them a reason to stay. They have to find what they are looking for here. They need to find what's interesting to them that keeps them coming back to steem. Steem offers a lot. There's a substitute to instagram, twitter, blogging, youtube, music and many more I haven't mentioned. Steem is more than SteemIT. Steem is a whole platform of unimagined human connections. It's more than a money making tool.

True, Steem is a lot about connections, not only but the human connections are an essential part of it. Thanks for your comment and for droping by

I agree with you Alex about what a little welcome message (and upvote) can do for a newbie. I have done this (check and interact on new #introduceyourself posts, non-trending) every once in a while, but not very consistent. I'll do it more often going forward. They need us to be there for them, or else many will leave to more welcoming places.

That's a good initiative.. I actually never look at trending, it doesn't mean a damn thing.. I rather curate stuff dropped in channels instead.. But I also never look at the introducemyself pages either, so got to start doing that.. I remember how nice it was to being welcomed there :)
