Bandwidth?!?
Wow this is an interesting place. I want to learn all I can about what makes it tick.... About the math that makes this magic.
So I got a notification when I tried to comment on something that I'd exceeded my bandwidth. So I checked in on steemd https://steemd.com/@myklovenotwar
And saw that yes indeed my bandwidth was low. So in true research fork, I wanted to see how quickly it regenerates and reloaded steemd... Every time I reloaded it, I got a radically different number and it fluctuated greatly.... Even went into negative.
So what is this? Is there any formula out there for what takes up bandwidth and how much sp it takes to regenerate, etc.
Huge learning curve and oh so fascinated!!! Thank you steem.
I have a post about this on my blog, also look for posts with the tag bandwidth there are several good ones out there. I will try to give you a short example here though basically it is like this imagine steemit's bandwidth is a bathtub and a lot of people want to swim in it. steemians are grouped in 3 categories Whales (people with a lot of reputation, steempower and thus clout ), dolphins the middle class of the pod (with good but not stellar clout , steempower and reputation ) and us the minnows who are the Oliver Twists of the pod. (obviously the more the work the fatter the fish we become ). Now if a lot of minnows are swimming there is a lot of bandwidth for all but if a load of whales and dolphins want into the tube we minnows get flushed out and have to wait on the sidelines until the whales decide to get out of the tub. Now the system will tell you to power up to fix the problem but ignore it because you can't. Once you are in time out also known as bandwidth hell, you cannot post, comment add people , use your wallet or vote, basically you re reduced to being a spectator until the whales leave the system ...
Wow @tygertyger that's quite an example. What does it take to become a whale in terms of sp?
I am not sure a few hundred I was told but there are people in chat that know a lot more then I have only been here a week ...
Yeah me too. And just getting going the last couple days with committing to it. I haven't been able to get into chat yet.
Hey do you know anything about wait times to get an account? When I first signed up in 2016 it was instant but when I tried to again last month (I forgot that I already had), I still haven't heard. Is it just that it's becoming so popular?
it took me 14 days to get approved. They approve manually at this point as they allocate a steempower loan to newcomers for a while until they get on their own feet ...
Wow and again this morning. It seems that eight am pst is a busy time for whales... Or maybe for bandwidth in general. Sigh minnow life.
during the morning it is super hard to get a toe in the bathtub ...
