Why is mining important?

I don't know how we ever came to question mining, there hasn't been one soul able to help me understand why some tokens are considered cryptocurrencies when there is no mining involved.

No computers verifying transactions? No blockain. Simple as that!

I've been mining with Hashflare for some time and have no regrets, even Genesis with its mining allocation does not compare profit wise.
