Iceland will spend more energy in mining #Bitcoin than in homes in 2018. An electric firm says so.

It seems a joke but it is real. According to an electrical firm, Iceland will consume more electricity in processes related to Bitcoin #mining than in homes this 2018.

Johann Snorri, a spokesman for power company HS Orka, has reported that the country faces an exponential consumption in Bitcoin mining that will cause it to consume more electricity than homes across the country this year.

Iceland has 340,000 inhabitants, among which the #cryptocurrency boom has also emerged and, according to Johann, if all the projects related to Bitcoin mining come to light, #electricity companies will not have enough energy to supply them.

Each mining center, according to Johann, will demand around 840 gigawatts per hour in 2018, while houses need about 700 gigawatts of energy ... each year.

The #cryptocurrency mining has been a subject of recurrent debate in Iceland during the last months, with politicians pointing out that this activity hardly requires personnel and does not leave taxes, dropping a possible acceleration towards the regularization of this industry in the Icelandic territory.bitcoin-island-lead.png
