PNY GTX 1060 3gb Review Miners BEWARE!

in #mining7 years ago

Whats up my fellow crypto miners and steemit readers. The graphics card market has been really crazy lately and there are many brands of the GTX 1060 going around the internet so i figured would share my adventure as a new miner with this particular card.

As you probably know graphics cards prices are just ridiculous right now and i have not been mining very long so i never got those lovely prices that some of you have gotten in the past, like 179.99 for a GTX 1060. So knowing this it put me in a difficult position seeing how my plan was to mine Ethereum but.... Ethereum will soon going to proof of stake and the DAG file size is getting bigger and bigger which means the cheapo cards will not be able to mine Ethereum any more. So rather then wait god knows how long for these guys to come back down to earth on there prices and miss out i spotted this sucker

Yep the PNY 1060 3gb

At the time it was only 219.99 so i figured its better than waiting around not mining anything right?... i mean it is a gtx 1060 after all and i have seen lots of miners on You Tube getting around 24 mega hash with the gtx 1060 overclocked. So i took a shot on the card and bought it at best buy. So as soon as it arrived i eagerly popped it into my rig fired up Claymore miner and here is what you get for your $219.99....

Yep a whopping 15 mega hash! Yes i know this is a long way from the 24 mega hash that those guys on You Tube i seen were getting. So at this point iam thinking oh my god i just got ripped off, time to return this thing. Now i know what your thinking now "just overclock it" and that was exactly what i did next. I held on to the hope that this card would just amaze me with its overclocking ability...i mean it does say overclock on the box right haha. Well here are the results i got in claymore miner.

I managed to overclock the memory to about 600 in msi afterburner and i got about 18 mh/s still not great but it was at least stable for a hour.So i decided to try to push it more and here is what i got to.

At about 700 on the memory clock i got to 19 mh/s and this thing just started crashing constantly and so i just called it quits at this point. So overall my final thoughts about this cards is just stay away from this thing its a steaming piling of poopoo with 2 fans on it. As of this date 8/3/2017 i still see this card floating around the internet at a price $259.99 or less. So if your a newbie miner just stay away from this one your r.o.i with this card is pretty bad.

But hold on why is this card so terrible?! i have a gtx 970 that does better than this thing without any overclocking at 17 mh/s stock. Well the answer turned out to be the memory, i fired up GPU-z to see this cards specs and here is what i found.

This card uses the dreaded Hynix memory, like how many other have said this memory is just garbage, Samsung memory is always the best to have.

So that about wraps it up for my little story as a newbie in mining i know iam not the first to get burned by some of these junk 1060 that are going around but i have not seen any one mention the PNY 1060 yet so i figured i at least try to save some of you guys the frustration.

Thanks for taking the time to read my first post oh and just in case some of you are wondering here are a few other benchmarks of this card in nice hash

Well the memory lottery is always rigged against you. Perhaps you should try out some other coins to mine. Whattomine shows you profitability for different coins, you should check out DGB(Skein) usually the most profitable major coin for nvidia cards. Thanks for sharing good info!

Haha, yea the memory lottery is very cruel. I try to stick with the higher memory models like the 6gb or sc versions and have gotten mostly samsung or micron memory(evga and gigabyte brands). Yea it cost more but at least you can mine ether longer with the 6gb versions. Oh! and thanks for the whattomine link checking that out now.

Thanks for the review wanted to buy one, now I dont :D
