Is ETH mining on genesis profitable?

As the SHA256 and X11 mining contracts are sold out, it's just a matter of time until ETH is gone too.

The following post supports this conjecture:

So I decided to upgrade 10 MH/s of ETH mining on genesis!

Okay. Good for you! But is this realy profitable??

Well, lets do the math...

Assumed the price and difficulty stays the same, I will break even in 171 Days (6 months)!
After the mining period, that would mean an incredible profit of ~977$ (400%)

Alright sir... that looks amazing, but the price and difficulty won't be the same for two years!?

Yes.

Yes, what??

Yes, they will change. The price will go down and hopefully up again. The difficulty will always adjust to that. There will be bad days, where you earn way less than the calculated price, but also good days on which the price is way up.

Thats the big risk of mining, crypto and even life.
There are good days and bad days. What counts is the end result.

I heared ETH will soon switch to Proof-of-Stake! So I lose all my money!?

Yes and no. It's likely that POW gets replaced by POS, which means you won't mine ETH anymore. But don't worry, genesis won't let you stay in the rain. As soon as they change to POS, you will continue to mine ZCASH with the same contract, which is approximately equally profitable.

So, should I buy ETH Hashpower?

• Are you aware of the risk?
• Can you still buy food if you lose the invested money?
• Do you believe in Ethereum and the whole blockchain technology?
• Are you patient enough?
