CPUforGood Wants To Free Slaves With Browser Mining
As expected, browser mining is the next big thing. It was only a matter of time until people realize there is this huge amount of unused CPU cycles, wasted while people are browsing the internet.
I'm not going to re-open that specific Pandora's box that exploded a week ago about steem.supply and JSEcoin. Instead, I'm going to talk about an interesting project involving, yes, browser mining.
It's called CPUforGood and this time it's about Monero, a popular choice among browser mining aficionados. But there are a few caveats:
- the mining script is not served to users server-side, instead, users can download a browser extension which will be activated when and how they want.
- the proceedings are going to a charity which aims to free people from modern slavery (namely it pays the debt of people who can't pay it anymore).
The project is aiming at Pakistan for now and it's supported by one charity and two commercial companies (probably developers of the extension).
It's not clear yet if this is legit or it's yet another scam, there isn't any physical address on the website, and just 3 links. But as a long time (and most of the time completely silent) borrower on Kiva I think this could be a good idea. Crypto needs to make a difference in the charity area as well, if we really want to take it seriously, as a store of value.
Now if only we would know beforehand if this is legit or not...

If you're new to Steemit, you may find these articles relevant (that's also part of my witness activity to support new members of the platform):
I'm cold and heartless. I want to keep the crypto I mine. Muhahahaha.
In all seriousness is there a browser extension currently that can be used for profit?
If not I'll have to check this one out once it's confirmed legitimate.
naw i use freenitco.in cpu mining site it pays in btc so...
Would be important to measure the impact of browser mining in resources consumption: energy, bandwidth, CPU life cycle, etc., in order to determine the cost/benefit of this solution regardless of the application (charity, profit).
Thanks for bringing this concept to discussion! This is my first week in steemit :)
Welcome :) Wishing you a pleasant journey here!
Thank you! I'm following you and enjoying your posts. Keep going :)
I've been thinking about browser mining quite a bit lately. I've decided that I like it. It would seem to me that it's a perfectly legitimate way to monetize a site...IF...they are honest about it.
I visited your profile to get the link to your Steemit rewards FAQ post because I intend to refer to it and link to it on my rewards related post.
And I found this post. I read your JSEcoin related post and how some differences arose when the concept was discussed. CPUforGood does sound to be a good thing, considering that its just the second project I know of related to browser mining. I am sure more projects will come up and there will be some value for the coins thus created in future.
Edit:- I missed the important thing. Based on my 5 months observation and interaction with you, I happily voted you for witness today. :)
Thank you! Really, really appreciate your support! :)
The idea seens great, as long as it is not a scam. I would love to get more info on wich projects/people is the money flowing to and of course, how much of the crypto generated gets to the final goal and not leaked in the organization. A few more transparency would help, but again, using free exuberance to fight need is a beautifull way to balance world differences.
he he, very nicely put :)
I'd say it's more likely for this to be a scam, but if it is, there will certainly be legit alternatives sooner or later.
While work to ends slavery is worth while, it's important to think about second order effects.
For a moment, imagine your reaction if somebody with deep pockets shows up to buy out your slave's contacts. What do you do with the money?
Charities with long experience fighting international slavery find that buying out contracts is one of the worst ways because it enriches the slaveholders and perpetuates the institution of slavery.
Given that it's unknown whether this is a scam, and that it enriches slaveholder I would steer clear.
Interesting take. What do you think about Kiva?
they say a picture is worth a thousand words:

Thank you! Nice to meet a fellow Kiva supporter here. :) And impressive numbers, congrats!
I do what I can.

I've seen so many of these posts I thought about making a bot that automatically downvotes all comments that start with "Brother"
thank you brother
Interessing post Witness , Steem.supply is always one if the best steemit tools thank you so much for sharing
looks good browser mining is something pretty cool
