- You don’t know why you’ve adopted microservices
For all of the work involved, microservices offer a number of benefits. That is, after all, why your company has adopted them.
So tell me… what are those benefits? Why is your company moving to microservices?
You don’t know? Well, that presents a few problems.
You won’t see the benefits if you don’t know what they are
For all that you stand to gain with microservices, you’ll face added cost, complexity, and pain. But here’s the thing: that added cost, complexity, and pain? It’s going to happen. Whether you like it or not.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of the gains. They won’t magically materialize as you start deploying your microservices. Instead, you’ll need to maintain a deliberate focus on the challenges that you’re trying to address, and make sure that you are constantly moving in a direction that addresses them. This means not just up-front planning, but making course-corrections along the way.
Moreover, this means making some fundamental changes — technical and organizational alike. Many of the biggest benefits of microservices lie not with the microservices themselves, but in the non-technical benefits that they unlock. But while those benefits may be unlocked for us, we need to deliberately open the door and walk through it.
In other words, if you don’t know why you’re building microservices in the first place, you’ll wind up with all of the pain and none of the gain.
