Steemit as a microfinance platform #4
A series of practical guides and case studies from UNCDF MicroLead, Mastercard Foundation, and PHB Academy.
1: Use Mobile as a Tool
2: Be an Agent
MicroLead is proud to release its series of DFS Toolkits designed for Financial Service Providers to succeed in their Digital Financial Services Journey.
These toolkits capitalize on the extensive work which MicroLead supported for indigenous FSPs to offer DFS to reach rural remote communities. The toolkits complement existing research and publications and captures consulting firm PHB’s experience with over 100 digital financial service implementations.
The first two business models of this framework consist in using mobile as a service where basic transactions are performed by staff of the FSP using mobile devices. We will describe them in toolkit #1 “Use Mobile as a Tool” and #2 “Be an Agent.” Models 3 and 4 describe agency banking where an agent (of a MNO, PSP or FI) assists clients with the transactions if needed. Clients can also perform transactions by themselves except for cash in/out where an agent is needed as intermediary.
3: Leverage an Existing Agent Network
« Agent banking has been considered around the world as an additional channel for delivering financial services. However, deployments are challenged with keeping agents motivated, reducing attrition and making the model sustainable. Agent selection has not happened frequently by design but has basically occurred by default, based on a strategy of expansion in which anyone interested has been selected as an agent.
To develop a robust agent-based model, it is important for financial and non- bank institutions alike to recognise that agents are their first customers. As with any business, it is important to identify the right customers and to offer services and a value proposition that ensure the customers remain loyal to the business. »
4: Develop Your Own Agent Network
These digital finance toolkits capitalize on and complement existing research, publications and documentation and have been developed based on MicroLead and PHB’s experience with over 100 digital financial service implementations.
This fourth toolkit explores the model of developing a (proprietary) agent network.
5: Create Your Own Mobile Banking Channel
UNCDF’s MicroLead programme team is proud to introduce its fifth digital financial services (DFS) toolkit: Create Your Own Mobile Banking Channel. This step-by-step guide, from UNCDF/MicroLead and Mastercard Foundation, is available in both French and English, and features real-world case studies of MicroLead partners Fidelity Bank in Ghana, Mwanga Community Bank and Equity Bank in Tanzania.
