Cloud Sculptures—a microfiction story

in #microfiction5 years ago

Hello this is a very short story for the microfiction contest hosted by @jayna on her blog.

Cloud Sculptures

“A horse!” Adriana shouted.

“A baseball cap!” Lee pointed.

“I don’t see anything,” Richard said. “Just fluffy white.”

“Relax your eyes,” Rachel said.

Richard returned his gaze to sky. He squinted and pondered.

“Oh, a diamond!” Lee whispered.

“I see it too,” Adriana said. She took Lee’s hand. “We’re cloud cousins!”

Richard grimaced while the girls giggled. He rested his shoulders on the grass, rubbed his eyes, and tried one last time to abandon his focus. Maybe then he’d see some images in the white puffs floating far above him.

A light breeze tossed a dandelion onto his chin.

It was no use. He shook his head and rose.

“You girls are nuts,” Richard said.

“Where are you going! Stay with us, nobody cares whether you see anything in the clouds,” Adriana told him.

“This is stupid kids’ stuff. Boring, too,” Richard said.

Lee hopped up and grabbed Richard’s arm.

“Try again. At least stay with us, it’s a beautiful day and there’s nothing else going on.”

Richard huffed and went along. As the three lay down again, nobody spoke. Lee saw a hippo and a ballerina. Adriana saw a boot and a banana. They kept it to themselves as Richard slowed his breath and closed his eyes.

When his eyes opened, he discovered big, beautiful waves stretching across the ocean, their white crests falling into the blue mist.

“Amazing,” he said.

The girls lay silent while Richard reconnected with his imagination.

Very nice, @vdux. I love how this story plays out as Richard first rejects the game because he can’t connect with his imagination, and then begins to see shapes. Well done!

A very gentle journey for Richard, a kind of awakening. Very nicely done.

Glad you enjoyed it

Great @vdux, your story brought me many memories.

Bueno mi amigo, el cielo tiene muchas sorpresas.

I enjoyed your story. Lots of images in the clouds @vdux.

Hey that's good to hear, means a lot to me!

Great story! There's so much in that tiny thing I am amazed. Love the dandelion on his chin most of all, such a simple event that the story turn on.

Glad you enjoyed it!
