Micro Fiction - CATCHING FIREFLIES
One warm summer night, in the distance tiny lights flickered. A beacon calling me. My heart filled with delight. Into the house, I ran. I rummaged through the cabinets searching for Mom’s mason jars. Then I dashed to Dad’s workshop. I found the drill laying on the workbench. Carefully, I drilled air holes in the lid.
I grabbed my butterfly net from the mudroom before sprinting out the back door. I was on a mission, and I had a plan. As I approached the flickering light, I was in full ninja mode. I was one with the butterfly net as I descended upon my prey. The fireflies had no time to evade capture.
Quickly, I transferred my catch into their new home. I heard something clink against the glass. Curiously, I held my treasure up to the moonlight to investigate the cause of the noise. I was in awe of what I saw. The Fairy Queen was gently placing her tiara back on her head. Softly she offered me a wish in exchange for her freedom. Her beauty and sing-song voice were mesmerizing. Without a thought, I loosened the jar’s lid as I thought of my favorite food.
I felt a nudge and heard Mom say “wake up sleepy head.” I rubbed the sleep from my eyes in disbelief. Had I dreamt of catching the Fairy Queen? Then Mom added, “I thought you would be hungry after catching fireflies last night, so I made pancakes and bacon, your favorite breakfast.”
