This is my entry for @jayna's microfiction contest - the prompt is "sunset". Here's a link to her post:

‘The water’s reflecting the beautiful sunset,’ said Vicki preparing her kayak. ‘There’s hardly a ripple. I love evening paddles?’ She spoke vivaciously to the senior coach, Phil, who would be leading the trip.
‘I looked forward to this all week. I couldn’t wait to unwind on the water,’ Vicki tried again.
‘I find it distracting when you keep prattling on. I'm responsible for the safety of all the paddlers and I would like to concentrate on that.’ Vicki’s good mood faded fast. Why couldn’t he answer kindly?
Vicki drifted along at the bank. She was surprised to catch up with Phil by himself too. She soon saw why. He was trying to trap a poor duckling with a plastic four pack holder stuck around its tiny neck. It would surely die if not released.
‘Disgusting litter louts,’ Phil grumbled as he angled his kayak so the bow was underneath a landing stage where the terrified duck had taken sanctuary.
‘Aaa Geronimo!’ yelled Phil as he slithered unceremoniously from his cockpit, and splashed down in a soggy, undignified heap.
Phil stood and the water came to his chest. Gently he manoeuvred the drink holder off the duck’s neck and it was able to swim away unscathed.
‘Here, let me hold your boat,’ Vicki offered while he pulled himself onto the landing stage. He was drenched with slimy river water but, in her eyes, a brilliant hero.
Autocratic, kind-hearted, sopping wet Phil. He was a darling really.
Very nice story. I'm glad Phil turned out to be a nice guy in the end.
