Since July 17, approximately 170,000 residents of flood-hit Kuttanad taluk in Central Kerala’s Alappuzha district have been living in 470 government-run relief camps. They still do not know when they can return to their homes. The rain has subsided but most villages in the region remain under water. “They will be allowed to go home only after the water recedes,” district collector S Suhas said on Sunday. “It is impossible to predict when it will happen.”

The villagers were forced to flee to safety as the monsoon gained strength and caused massive flooding, damaging their homes, destroying thousands of hectares of paddy fields and killing livestock. Human casualties were averted as the district administration quickly set up relief camps.

Though the level of flood water is started to decrease, it will take weeks for Kuttanad to come back the normal life. The traffic through AC Road has not been reinstated and the AC road is still under flood waters.
Food and civil supplies minister P Thilothaman has said that the allegations in connection with the shortage of food grains in relief camps are baseless. The minister was speaking to media persons after visiting the relief camps in Kuttanad. "I have not received any complaints from the members of the relief camps. The people told me that they have been getting good service from the government agencies. Some people with the vested interest are trying to level baseless allegations that the relief camps were facing acute shortage of food grains," said the minister.!
