RE: Work and Lifestyle in Singapore

In Singapore , People tend to be fairly wary of expats. They will treat you with respect, but it may be difficult to make that first friend.

You will be filmed everywhere. Whether you are in a taxi, or an elevator. There is probably a camera pointed at you.

Don't think you'll outsmart the local drug laws.

If you love seafood and fish, you're in luck. If you like beef, don't expect the nice grain fed Alberta, Spanish, Texas or South American beef. It will probably be corn fed, and tasteless and very expensive.

Small local stores can be your best source for basics. Basic liquors, groceries, prepared dry foods (breakfast cereal, jello, spices) may be dollars cheaper than large grocery stores. Make sure you check them out.

Everything seems to come with an egg on it. There are at least a dozen different kinds of eggs available to buy in the supermarkets.

Many people don't cook at home, they just eat at hawker stalls. The food is often incredibly good value. eg. 2 chicken wings (large) and rice is about $2.75 UDS/2.3 Euros. Veggies can be added for a bit more.

Veggies are very cheap, especially if you buy them at the market. They are usually high quality and fresh. Markets are also excellent for fresh fish, chicken and pork. You won't find beef (at least I haven't found it)

Restaurants are very expensive. Liquor in restaurants is expensive. Often, service is below what you would expect. It's not unusual for everybody at your table to get their meals at different times, or the appetizers and meals to come together.

Lots of people meet for beers are hawker stalls. The Tiger girls are very friendly, and provide great service with a smile. A 650 ml Heinekin/Tiger is about $5 USD/4.3 Euros. It won't be fancy, but it will be cheap and cheerful.

Owning a car is super expensive, and often not that convenient. Public transport here is excellent, cheap, and comprehensive. And taxis abound for the times you want to opt for door to door.

Sing is a small island, but it will take you longer to get places than you think it should. Allow extra time. IMO, you're better off paying more for a flat close to work - your time is precious.

Your realtor will tell you to get your basics at Eek-Yah. This shop is known as IKEA in the rest of the world.

Before you buy anything, go to Daiso. It's a Japanese dollar store ($2 in Singapore). More good things there than you can imagine. Top quality Japanese gear.

Prostitution is legal, but controlled.

It is hot, which I love. But if you don't, there is AC most everywhere.

Try everything! Go everywhere! Enjoy yourself!
