Trek to Tikona
Tikona Fort, also renowned as Vitandgad fort, is a dominant hill fort in Maval region. Tikona fort is of 3500 feet high hill, pyramidal in shape and literally means triangle fort. This was the nerve center of the many activities of entire Maval Pawna regions. The fort is close to Pawna Dam and it’s mammoth entrance is a special attraction. It offers unhindered views of the entire region including the forts of Tung, Lohagad and Visapur.
Caves from fort are from seventh-eight centuries. A.D. Malik Ahmed Nizamshah of the Nizam dynasty conquered it in 1585. Shivaji Maharaj conquered Tikona fort along with other Pawna region forts in 1657. This fort was mainly used to keep watch on Pawna region. Jaysingh invaded the region in 1665 and attacked the local villages but the forts held out. Tikona fort was surrendered to the Mughal warrior Kubad Khan, according to the Treaty of Purandar signed on 12 June 1665 and He took over the fort on 18 June but it was later recaptured by the Marathas. Later, the fort was captured by British in 1818 after a small battle.
