Benvenidos a Xtampu Salt Lakes a.k.a. "pink gold" of Yucatan lagoons

in #mexico6 years ago (edited)

A complex of dozens of salt lakes of different pink colors, the Xtampu Salt Lakes (Salineras de Xtampu in Spanish) are located about one hour drive from Merida, Yucatan.

Harvesting pink salt is a Mayan tradition dating back thousands of years. For thousands of years, Mayan people living in Yucatán have harvested the valuable commodity from the pink lagoons fed by the Gulf of Mexico, later transporting it to other regions of the mighty Mayan empire.

The salt beds are full of tiny microbes that thrive in salty bodies of water and as the sun gets higher, you can see a film of salt developing on the waters surface. The pigment in these microbes cause the beautiful pink tones of the water and also gives flamingos that pink glow they're so famous for.

Entrance to the pink salt flats is free (on donation).

Do you remember Las Coloradas, another pink lakes that I visited in Mexico? Which do you like more?

Stay awesome and Steem on!

Lil Tammy

Oh, the pink sands are divine! How cool! I have never seen them and it is very intriguing to see water that is different from the rest!

Have you ever been to Bermuda? They actually have pink sand on the south shores, between Horseshoe Bay Beach and Warwick Long Bay. It's beautiful!

!tip

No, I have never been, but it is on my wishlist :D I´m little bit googling for Bay and whohooo that pink sand is another level of beauty!! Really stunning place!!!!
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for letting me know about it:)

It really is! I was amazed the first time I saw it.

It's caused by tiny red organisms that grow beneath the coral reefs just off the shore. When they die and fall to the ocean floor, the organisms mingle with bits of coral and crushed shell that are washed onto the beach and make the sand appear an otherworldly shade of pink. This according to Google

On place like this I am always surprised how amazing nature can be:))
btw. tomorrow I want to join your "Fridaymarket for first time ;)
