Best Parenting Advice Ever
Whenever I see new parents, or pregnant ladies, I tend to press my tongue lightly against my teeth.
I measure my words if I chat with them and aim to keep my mom-badge from shining in the sun.
I remind myself that Google exists and that parents don’t always want “solutions” to their “problems.” I also remember the best parenting advice given to me, and that it was shared as a part of a friendly conversation, with no intention from the speaker to try to get me to: fatten up my kid, give me potty training advice, help me make tooth-brushing easier or whatever randomness people feel like addressing when they uninvitedly give suggestions.
The best parenting advice was given to me by a wistful mom, who saw me, carrying a tiny baby and smiled broadly.
“I remember those days.”
I braced myself for the onslaught of unsolicited words. “They only get better every day.”
And that was it. The best parenting advice ever. She didn’t tell me to hold on, that time comes fast, to take lots of pictures, to brace yourself for the teenage years - nothing.
She had a very clear picture of how beautiful it is to watch children grow up, and she looked forward to what was coming next.
It makes parenting a little easier, when you know that you are living something joyous AND that there is more joy to be had with every stage of their life and your life.

I suspect we would have a much healthier society if more elders gave this type of advice, and more young parents would listen!
