Metal Art Design

I love it when a client gives me free range to design art pieces for their home. This particular client has engaged me multiple times and every new project he gives me more and more room to spread my artistic wings. Things don't always come out as planned but that's ok - that's the nature of art and creativity. I'm just so appreciative of a client that puts their trust in me and lets run wild. For this villa I decided to try some metallic sculpture with some pretty great results at the end. When I told John (client name changed for privacy) that I was going to weld a bunch of metal squares together in random pattern and paint them he was skeptical but said "OK do your thing!"

Here's the result. What do you think??

The first one came out so cool that I immediately engaged my welder to start work on a 2nd piece. I painted them in two strong and opposing colours and hung them in one of the hallways that led to the guest rooms. I felt they were a little too challenging visually to put them in the main living spaces, instead I wanted it to be that guests discovered them as they walked around the villa.

For the next pieces I wanted to create some lily pads out of metal that crept along the walls of another long hallway that was on the lower floor. Again this area was not a space that would immediately confront visitors but rather an area they would discover as they explored the villa. It actually leads to the sports area and the side entrance where guests would perhaps exit and enter to the car parking. I think they turned out just beautiful and although I designed them and played a large part in their creation I really must pass credit to the metal team I worked with. They were always patient with my requests and happy to think outside the box.

Next are the gongs. I wanted to create a group of different sized and different coloured circular "gongs" hung at seemingly random intervals on the wall.

There are more pieces but the villa is massive and I think maybe I can save the other pieces for another post. Let me show you some of the other rooms in the villa. It's a magnificent property on the east coast of Phuket looking out over the Bay of Phang Nga. It's an investment property and the owner doesn't actually live there. It's for the rich and famous of Thailand to escape for a little peace and quiet for a private vacation. There are seven bedrooms and all the interiors are designed by me. I also custom made much of the furnishings at my factory and my team did all the joinery throughout the villa.

Here are some pics from the bedrooms...

The main living space structure of the villa follows the original architectural design by Philip Stark who oversaw the design of each of the villas at "The Cape" so the rounded pillars and high vaulted roof are part of each villa. After that the owner was free to engage any interior designer to modify the design throughout. I have been engaged on five of these villas now as word spread of my design ideas. This was the first one I did and I think it set a nice standard for the rest of them. I very grateful to the owner for engaging me and also giving me free rein on the art pieces throughout the interiors.
