Welcome back to my favourite music...alphabetically.
Favourite Artist: Gorguts
Genre: Avant-Garde Technical Death Metal
Very technical but not as fast-paced as usual tech death, Obscura and Colored Sands are weird, dissonant and atonal with very strange riffs and methods of playing. I don't usually but in this case I love the growling vocals, I think they're among the best in death metal. This band has to be heard to be understood. Check out: Obscura (1998) and Colored Sands (2013)
Favourite Album: Glassworks by Philip Glass
Genre: Minimalism
My first Minimalism album, Glassworks was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a selection of sparse notes (that would be 'lowercase' apparently!) but instead there are an incredible amount of looping layers. What makes this album interesting is how they intersect and disperse. They don't cross at the same time every time and if you focus on one layer you can get lost in it. It's an incredibly immersive album. It can feel a bit silly at times with all the insanely fast elements (like with Floe) but even then I think it works astonishingly well. The depth here is insane. Check out Opening, it's a masterpiece.
Favourite Song: Go With The Flow by Queens of the Stone Age
Genre: Stoner Rock, Alternative Rock
A classic QOTSA song, Go With The Flow is one of my favourites because of it's slightly anxious driving main riff (the tempo is a bit uneasy to me for some reason) and awesome secondary guitar tracks. Also Josh Homme's vocals are great here as always.
