The first impression men and women find most attractive
Women find gloomy and inflated men more attractive than cheerful men, a study found. It turns out that when they smile less, men look more masculine.
The results show exactly the opposite for women.
The study found that both sexes responded very differently to emotions, including smiles.
Women prefer men who look bleak and ashamed, or proud and strong. The smallest men are the least attractive.
Men, on the other hand, point to smiling women as the most attractive. Men were least attracted to women who looked proud and self-confident.
"It is important to keep in mind that a study examines the first impressions of sexual attraction to pictures of opposite sex. We did not ask the participants whether they think the people in their photos seem suitable for a relationship or marriage - we wanted to investigate their instinctive reactions to carnal, sexual attraction. "
The smile is often associated with a lack of dominance. It is believed that the happy face seems more feminine.
Here's what the lead author of the study says, Professor Jessica Tracy:
"In general, the results obviously express some very traditional gender norms and cultural values that have emerged, developed and established in past centuries, at least in western cultures.
These include norms and values that many people would find old-fashioned, and perhaps we hoped we'd gone beyond them. "

As a woman, I can say that if I do find my way towards a gloomy man it is because a woman's nature is to Nurture.
A masculine man to me would be one that is able to protect me, either physically, emotionally or mentally. Perhaps there is room in my life for both a gloomy mate and physically strong mate -- but not a stale mate. LOL
