"The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on Our Capacity for Processing Information" is one of the most highly cited papers in psychology. It was published in 1956 by the cognitive psychologist George A. Miller of Princeton University's Department of Psychology in Psychological Review. It is often interpreted to argue that the number of objects an average human can hold in working memory is 7 ± 2. This is frequently referred to as Miller's Law.! Remembering numbers is difficult for our brains because numbers don't mean anything specific to us therefore there is not an image that comes to mind when we hear someone saying for example his phone number out loud.quotes-750x500.jpg
The Major system (also called the phonetic number system, phonetic mnemonic system, or Herigone's mnemonic system) is a mnemonic technique used to aid in memorizing numbers.
The system works by converting numbers into consonant sounds, then into words by adding vowels. The system works on the principle that images can be remembered more easily than numbers.Each numeral is associated with one or more consonants. Vowels and the consonants w, h, and y are ignored. These can be used as "fillers" to make sensible words from the resulting consonant sequences.
0 = s,z
1 = d, t
2 = n
3 = m
4 = r
5 = l
6 = ch, j or sh
7 = k,g
8 = f or v
9=b,p
The groups of similar sounds are fixed and used globally , but other sounds can be used as long as the person using the system can remember them and apply them consistently. The system is easy to remember and use and it provides an effective and fun way to remember drag dosages, dates, passwords and phone numbers.
If for example you wanted to remember the number 581522 you could picture:
58-Lava αρχείο λήψης.jpg
falling from above while
15-Tal (mikhail Tal) tal.jpeg
is checkmating a
22-Nun mrgan-fox-as-a-nun-CelebrityGirlModel-11.jpg
In order for the images featured to stick to the long term memory one would need to associate this pictures with the person, the place or other information in order to be able to stimulate his brain and make the images resurface every time..For example if this number was a pin from a bank account card you could imagine all that happening in a bank or an ATM. You could even make a conceptual link like thinking that the winner of the chess match between Tal and the Nun gets to keep the credit card for himself.
With a little practice it becomes second nature and your ability to convert numbers into images will seem more like a cool reflex. Next time when you encounter a number whether you will hope to remember it or be sure you will remember it, is up to you.
