Voting in a democracy is like gambling, except instead of risking your savings, you risk your freedom.

Plato agrees. Democracy is dreadful!

We still have a republic in the US, but the mob (from all political perspectives) is turning against it.

I've been thinking for sometime about the problem of democracy. The advent of the internet has kind of put democracy in overdrive. Plato claims democracies naturally lead to the rise of a tyrant. I don't know that I believe this, but I am curious how this all works out.

Ultimately, any time individuals are overpowered it is a problem. Attempting to codify a way of not overpowering anyone is a noble idea and probably can be done, but it hasn't been done precisely enough yet. Property rights makes it very challenging for alternative groups to relocate and 'fork' from the main population - since most land is already controlled and regionalised by states.
I suggest that any system that facilitates anyone to control anyone else is a problem and perhaps the only real solution is that we all learn to respect free will and learn how to teach each other the value of that. To do this means understanding how to heal the psychopathy that currently permeates humanity!

Plato (Socrates) claimed that rule by a Philosopher King was the solution.

I'm doubtful of this approach, but this was well before the invention of the constitutional republic.

hmm.. plato.. was.. a philosopher.. right? sounds convenient. lol

Yes, a bit dubious. I might attempt making a similar claim, but I have a food sensitivity to hemlock.

Ah, that's unfortunate - I have a similar health issue with bullets. ;)

Its not gambling when you always lose.

Our ideas of voting for a "leader" are where the trouble starts.

Our ideas that an honest man would run for office and be able to do anything good in a corrupt system is where we completely fail.

haha.. if you keep losing you must just need to vote harder! ;)

Thats why the united states is a repbulic

In principle a republic is a bit better than a pure democracy, but I rarely see examples of either being anything close to balanced.

exactly, Venezuela is also a republic... and it's completely torn into pieces.
