I started playing Inquisition a couple of days ago.
I am the lord of the Hinterlands!
I keep getting my ass kicked by the demons outside the Redcliffe Farm though:(
My party just picked up Dorian, and I am on my way to deal with some crazy dude.
I'm playing as an Elf Mage that looks like Brienne of Tarth.
Yeah, there are a few rifts that you need to leave for later once you reach lvl 10. So don't worry about those. There's another one in a cavern near the woods part between two mountains where all the bears are. Forget that one for now too.
Who you gonna romance? My favourite romance is Solas, probably because he looks a bit like my husband hehehe But I also love Cullen and Dorian as romance options. I created a male Inquisitor just so I could romance Dorian. I will do a male elf to romance Cassandra as well. Right now I am redoing a Solas romance. I'll also redo a Cullen romance.
Good luck with Alexius :D He IS kinda crazy when you think about it. Be sure to go to Val Royeaux, pick up Vivienne, Sera, and Bull from the Storm Coast and to the Fallow Mire BEFORE you do In Your Heart Shall Burn. In the Fallow Mire, you get infinite amounts of undead every time to walk into the water and near the "gates". Your companions will tell you to run ahead and that the undead are endless. They end at some point and that place is a great spot for infinite XP. Fallow Mire can gain you a full 1.5 to 2 levels of XP.

I have a lady elf mage, and was hoping that Cassandra was in to the ladies...
She's the only one I really like so far.
I just got Dorian in the party, but my co-worker told me he's only into male characters.
The dwarf is pretty funny. I laughed pretty hard when he said "Maker's balls"
Maybe his humor will win my elf over.
Time will tell...
Varric is sadly not a romance option :( A lot of us down at the Dragon Age Universe facebook group were disappointed by that.
Cassandra is only into men. Dorian only into men.
If you're a female elf, these are your options: Iron Bull, Solas, Cullen, Sera, Blackwall, Josephine. I've never done Blackwall or Sera. She's all right when you friend her, she's a strange cookie that one. Iron Bull has funny convos when you speak to him and one of the most hilarious scenes if you do romance him, which you can find on YouTube. Solas romance is complex, Cullen is adorable. I've never done Josephine.
You don't have to commit to anyone just yet, once you get farther in the game there are missions for the companions with convos if you're flirting with them to lock that romance in. So, while you're at Haven, flirt the pants off everyone (which is what I do haha), and see who you like best and are drawn to.
Haha Sera. She's something. First two plays I did not friendship her but rivaled her, however, now that I friendship her all the time, since my 3rd play, she's growing on me. Some of the things she says sometimes actually makes a bit of sense. I love the names she comes up for a character you'll meet later on. They're the best nic-names ever lol

Okay, I just came up with the ultimate guide, without spoilers, to choose your romance, aside from preference, if ever you're unsure.
Now do you prefer Dramas or Romances? Comedies or Tragedies?
Sera: Comedy
Iron Bull: Comedy Drama/Tragedy (depends on choices)
Cullen: Romance
Solas: Tragedy Romance
Blackwall: Drama Romance
Josephine: Romance

He's available after you've been to Val Royeau. When at Haven, outside teh Chantry, you'll find one of his quad mates there to speak with you.
