I Went to the Boston Steemit Meetup and Had a Great Time

in #meetup7 years ago (edited)

I intended to have this out Tuesday but as the preeminent philosopher of our time, Jeff Goldblum, once said 'Life finds a way (...to get in the way).'

The only facebook page truly worth following.

I had the pleasure to attend the Boston Steemit Meetup on Saturday with @aggroed, @limabeing, Mr. and Mrs. @otage, @honeywithmilk, and @sdkelly. Firstly, I'd like to thank Lima and Aggro for taking the time to organize and cover the expenses of the event, respectively. It was quite generous and a great example of the kind of positive community that's forming on Steemit.

Now, onto the event itself. I arrived a few minutes early at FuGaKyu and was directed to a nearby waiting area by the friendly staff. Once the others had arrived, we were placed in a room designed for larger parties with traditional Japanese seating in mind. Thankfully for those disinclined towards the idea of posterior cultural enrichment, there's a large gap under the table allowing for regular sitting.

Is an American 'junk in the trunk' joke too subtle or too overt in this case? (Image source)

Once our fashionably late host, Aggro, arrived, discussion again turned towards cryptos and the fundamentals of how the Steemit system functions (including the role of witnesses, Steem Dollars, etc.). After a pleasant meal during which we discussed how each of us had found Steemit and Aggro shared advice on finding one's niche/group on Steemit, it was time for the second part of the meetup.

Most of the group headed over to Knight Moves, a cozy board game cafe a little bit down the street. The relaxed atmosphere of the event continued (which is one surefire way of knowing you're not playing Diplomacy) with a few rounds of Apples to Apples and Taboo. (Note to past self for past future gaming reference, Gandhi's salt march is not nearly as well known as you think it is.)

Yes, this is an actual painting that exists and is currently for sale.

The event ended at 6pm, running a total of around 5 hours. Overall, I'd say everything went pretty well, there were unfortunately a fair number of cancellations but considering the bad luck of scheduling the day after a major storm, I can't be surprised, though we did have attendees from as far as New York. I'm very glad to have attended and definitely recommend for anyone on the fence to just jump in and attend the next one! It's a very warm and welcoming atmosphere, so even if you aren't a social butterfly, as I saw some mention in the comments of the announcement post, you'll still be just fine. I'm very glad I went and will try to make the next one.
