This is the general definition of the Law of Attraction, a term coined by William Walker Atkinson. In normal day-to-day life, the act of receiving what we focus on is demonstrated in many ways. A few brief examples;
If you study hard for an exam, you get better results; see the good in others despite their faults, and you'll learn to accept yourself, warts and all; view money more as an opportunity for freedom and you're more likely to accumulate wealth; treat your partner badly, and the relationship might not last.
By placing our focus on certain things in life, be they positive or negative, we get more of what we focus on.
Those who practice the law of attraction however set about it intentionally, with clear, definable goals in mind. A simple thought becomes an idea, and this idea is worked towards using willpower, before it finally becomes manifest. And this came about through the simple act of generating a thought and following it through.
To put it another way, thought is expressed through an idea, then is given motion by taking action, and through constant repetition, this action becomes habit, or a pattern of ingrained behaviour. Over time, this behaviour changes your own reality and becomes a part of your physical existence.
