An artificial iris was created

in #medicine7 years ago

The eyebrow in our eye acts as a stop in the camera by regulating the amount of light entering the lens - and its best feature is that it does it by itself, we do not even have to think about it. And scientists at Tampere University of Technology have just managed to create an artificial counterpart .

Researchers from the Smart Photonic Materials research group have created an artificial iris using a light-sensitive liquid crystal emitter - a liquid crystal molecule that changes the position of the liquid crystal into its predetermined position, thus automatically adjusting the level of the transmitted light automatically. It's a technique similar to that used today in smartphones or televisions to increase the viewing angles.

Now Finns will want to redesign their invention into a full-fledged medical implant, but first they will have to improve their sensitivity.
