The fruits of the chaste tree contain a small amount of essential oil, flavonoids, casticin, vitexin, isovitexin, alkaloids, viticin, glucosides and bitter principles. These components give the plant the ability to act on the pituitary and exert an anti-estrogenic and antispasmodic action, indicated to counter acne, and all those symptoms related to the premenstrual phase, associated with nervousness, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, depression; and in neurovegetative disorders of menopause.

The specific action on the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, with stimulation of the production of the gonadotropic hormone LH, which regulates the production of prolactin and decreases that of the follicle-stimulating hormone, makes the chaste tree a rebalancing of the progestin activity, from the properties galactogene (stimulates the milk secretion). The chaste tree is also used as a remedy against mastitis.

It also has a general sedative action, useful in tachycardia, pain in the solar plexus, vertigo, intestinal spasms, insomnia, psychosomatic illnesses that are located at the level of the genital organs, in amenorrhea.
