Importance of Media Literacy Skills

in #media7 years ago

Hello fellow Steemians , if you read one of my articles so far It is most likely that You saw me complaining about social media and the negative affects of it. Today I want to write about an important skill mostly doesn't known by the society.

What is Media Literacy ?

Everything started with communication honestly. However we can assume that biggest development was the printing press. For a lot of centuries literacy has referred to the ability to read and write. Obviously in our current era this thing is a little complicated because most of the people getting their information through internet and the information we get exposed daily is insane. We are getting exposed to many sources billboards , tv commercials , and all the storm of information coming from internet. How are we going to understand the difference between legitimate and unreliable information ? The question is simple You just need to improve your critical thinking skills. Media Literacy really become an essential skill in the 21st Century it is an ability to access , analyze , evaluate the media content we read daily.

Why Do We need Media Literacy Skills ?

As a Public Relation and Advertisement student let me explain you the reason of rapid development in communication and social studies. Well you won't be surprised but everything started with WWII. People tried several propaganda and manipulation techniques and they were happy about the efficiency.

In our current era you can assume most of the Social Media platforms as %90 percent of Spam. All the people got Media Literacy skills since we don't have a chance to avoid media. However developing our Media literacy skills are in our own hands. We need to be really critical about everything we read , see or create. Every ad champaign and anything created for consume containts tons of subtext. People really needs this ability to understand the meaning of media created content. Because even 3 years old children using their tablets and I find it highly dangerous and they are really open for external influences.

I don't know there are schools they added media literacy lessons to their curriculum yet . Obviously they need to add because it is an essential skill everybody needs to develop. As an instance my mother started using Facebook after 50 years and she beleives or at least thinks more than average person in order to understand whether the content is viable or not.

Media literacy skills can help a lot of youth people and also adults because if we can't understand the difference we will just become a pawn therefore everybody should develop their critical thinking skills because I don't think there will be regulations on internet for the health of the society. Therefore understanding is really important to prevent spread of cleverly structured subtexts.

very good seperator who did this ???

It is courtesy of @voronoi special thanks to him

now i realize that is really important....

Well I'm really glad if my writing accomplished something lel

I came from education background and media literacy lessons is an essential skill in schools nowadays. This skill is integrated in other curriculum as well but not as stand alone subject per se.

One needs a certain degree of skepticism when encountering the mainstream media, and any other media these days. Too much media bias, and not enough actual truth. Swampy waters out there for sure. Research the sources, look at all points of view. Think critically! Thanks for a great post!
