Who is running the NYT's coverage of the war between Israel and Hamas?

Look at today's NYT headline and the accompanying photo.

Do you detect a bias in the pairing of the two?

The headline proclaims: "U.S. Vetoes Security Council Resolution Demanding Cease-Fire in Gaza," while the photo caption reads:

“A man carrying the body of his relative, killed in Khan Younis, on Friday.”

The photo, I assume, is not doctored. Palestinian men, women, and children are indeed dying in Gaza. Israeli men, women, and children at Kibbutz Be'eri and elsewhere in Israel and Gaza have also suffered violent deaths during the past month. But the decision to place that photo immediately beneath that headline makes an editorial statement, I believe, and that statement, if formulated as a question, appears to be: "How could the U.S. veto a cease-fire resolution when Palestinian children are dying???"

There is a valid and important reason for the U.S. to have vetoed the UN cease-fire resolution, and I applaud President Biden for authorizing that veto. But there is no doubt that, in the short term, if the fighting continues, there will be more casualties on both sides. Those of us who care about Israelis and/or Palestinians will mourn that loss of life. And we will continue to hope that the outcome of this war will eventually lead to the possibility of peaceful co-existence between these two long-suffering peoples.
