Here is my entry for the logo contest!

This logo from Eurpean Blockchain was the inspiration - Now some more detail and a medical twist!

Why I am so excited for MedBlock

With both of my parents being physicians and having been around electronic medical records since 2004, this is a project I am fired up about.

When the government started offering stimulus money for physicians to switch to a certified Electronic Health Record, or EHR, I knew there was something more sinister at play.

The government was supposed to be subsidizing the cost of the EHR by offering the practice up to $44,000 per physician depending on when they began the program. In order to get the money, which was paid out over a number of years.

The program has since ended, but this money encouraged many physicians and hospital groups to purchase an EHR. In exchange you have to send a slew of data to the federal government for them to analyze.

After implementing an EHR, being a consultant for other practices, and developing my own EHR, I have come to the realization that no EHR fits every practice.

Even within the same specialty, physicians and healthcare organizations practice in different ways.

The main problem I see with existing EHR's is the lack of interoperability. This was supposed to be the driving force behind this stimulus money as EHR vendors were supposed to be able to send information between vendors in an easier way. Finally, after many years, this is starting to take place thanks to FHIR and some EHR's creating their own API's to share information with other vendors.

At the end of the day, the patient should have the ability to hold their medical record with them and deliver it to the next provider they see.

Another problem is that every EHR has their own patient portal, so patients end up having their medical record in numerous patient portals that do not exchange data very effectively, if at all.

These are some of the issues that I believe an Decentralized EHR can solve. The old, centralized EHR system is going by the wayside.
