The original founders of McDonald's were two brothers from the McDonald family. The brand was purchased from them by a businessman named Ray Kroc, who was initially their partner but hated them for striving to maintain a small number of local restaurants, instead of embracing his vision - massive expansion and the establishment of a commercial empire.

He bought the company from them and made sure to screw them up in the deal so that they would not enjoy the future profits of the brand. According to the agreement, the McDonald's corporation was handed over to Kroc along with all its intellectual property, and the McDonald brothers were allowed to stay with the original restaurant they founded, the one from which the McDonald's chain originated. They changed the name of the restaurant and offered a different menu than McDonald's which does not compete with the chain. This wasn't enough for Crook, pissed off because the two refused to sell their local restaurant, so he set up a McDonald's branch across the street in order to financially crush their business.

Kroc developed the chain McDonald's which became what it is today, and the McDonald brothers remained small footnotes in the history of its prosperous company.
