A 3 p.m. Pacific Time, A 90-percent T-Mobile Arena rose to their feet as Conor McGregor marched out from the back with the tricolour flag around his shoulders and his SBG Ireland team walking behind him.

Mayweather’s entrance was a mixture of boos and cheers, but still the energy was incredible and the atmosphere was up there with some of the recent McGregor weigh-ins during his UFC fights.

The Irishman was the first up, tipping the scales at 153lbs and he celebrated with his usual roar and gestures to the crowd. Mayweather came next and he came in at a light 149.5lbs.

Almost every fight expert — mixed martial artists included — thinks that Mayweather, 49-0 and arguably the best defensive fighter, should handle McGregor.

But, as they say, where there’s a fist there’s a chance.

For McGregor, he has to make it a barroom brawl. He comes from a sport where you wrestle and kick and elbow and choke. While he can’t do those things here tonight, he can try to flick an elbow inside, and do some grabbing and pushing. He is bigger — maybe by as much as 20 pounds on fight night — than Mayweather, and he has to use that. He also has to use his longer reach to keep Mayweather at distance.
How Floyd Mayweather will win

For Mayweather, the key really is to just be Mayweather. But he has vowed to make this an exciting fight and said he would knock out McGregor. So you might expect to see him coming forward and fighting on the inside more than usual.

And the inside might actually be the safest place for him to be. It might seem counterintuitive for Mayweather to stay close, but one thing that McGregor does not have experience in doing during mixed martial arts fights is shortening his punches. That’s what Mayweather, and most boxers, can do with ease. So expect Mayweather to land the much better shots on McGregor from close in.

And being close has one other advantage for Mayweather. It keeps McGregor from being able to line up a home run shot at distance. And a shot like that is really McGregor’s best hope.
