Happy Golden Ratio Day (January 6, 18)!!

in #mathematics7 years ago (edited)

Today (1-6-18) is Golden Ratio Day (or Golden Mean Day). Since the rational approximation of the golden ratio with three decimal digits is

The golden ratio is the positive root of the polynomial x2-x-1. This number plays an important role in nature and mathematics. It is related to the Fibonacci numbers. In a recent post I explained how they are related, in particular I describe a closed formula (Binet's formula) that expresses the Fibonacci numbers in terms of the golden ratio.

I recall you that there is Pi Day, March 14th. Since the rational approximation of π with 2 decimal digits is 3.14. The year 2015 was exceptional since Pi Day at 9 hours and 26 minutes coincided with the rational approximation of π with 7 digits: 3.1415926... By the way, Einstein's birthday is on Pi Day!

There is also Pi Approximation Day, July 22. Since the fraction 22/7 coincides with the value of π in the first two decimal places. This approximation was known by Archimedes.

Happy Golden Ratio Day!!
