The average is also referred to as the mean.

For example:

The prices of all 10 houses, in thousands of U.S. dollars on a street block are

57, 45, 92, 57, 56, 94, 68, 72, 75 and 64.

Find the average price of a house on that street block.

To find the average, we have to add all the numbers in the set and divide the sum by the number of data points which is 10.

Therefore, the average price of a house on that street block is $68,000.

Now try:

A student's grades this semester are

65, 72, 85, 91 and 92.

Find the average grade of this student for this semester.

Solution:

Thus, the average grade for this student is 81.

Although it looks very easy for us adults to do, for students it might not be easy at all.
In Part 3, I will explain how to use this knowledge to construct the relative frequency table of a set of numbers.
