Knowing the meaning of a word sentence: Be the boss of word problems - Part 3

A word sentence is a relation between two or more word phrases.
It can include:
For example:
Which of the following is a word sentence?
- five more than x
- five more than x is equal to 9
For number 1:
five more than x translates to x + 5.
This is not a sentence. It does not say anything about the amount x + 5, so it is not a word sentence.
For number 2:
five more than x is equal to 9 is a word sentence since it gives us a relation between the two quantities which is equal.
Thus, number 2 is a word sentence.
Now try:
Which of the following is a word sentence?
- Three-quarters y is greater than 0 and less than 25.
- The quotient of x by three
For number 1:
There is a relation between the two quantities so this means that it is a word sentence.

For number 2:
There is no relation so this means that it is not a word sentence.
