Someone put this power of mathematics online already: it is at

Deriving it myself, I found that it goes as "drop" = 8 inches per mile SQUARED
(or 8 cm per kilometers squared)
It adds up rather quick, and easily allows for tests.
As a bonus, the online calculator allows the observer's altitude as an input parameter.
