Completing the Square

This post talks about solving quadratic equation by method of completing the square - though we know that quadratic equations can be solved by different methods.

Skills needed: Knowledge in the following methods:

Extracting Square Root
Factoring Method

Also, recall on the following property:

Square-Root Property

Zero Product Property

There are some quadratic equations that cannot be solved by factoring , therefore it is very important that you know well on how to extract square root since it is part of the process in completing the square.

Let us review on the method where equations of the form q6.pngis solved by the square root property.

Let us consider the following equation:

The equation q8.png can be solved in a similar way since the left side of the equation is a perfect square trionomial.

What to do if equation is non-factorable quadratic trinomial?

To solve quadratic equations by taking the square root, you must have a perfect square equal to a constant. A non-factorable quadratic trinomial should be changed to a perfect square trinomial and that is what we called completing the square.

How to change a non-factorable quadratic trinomial to a perfect square trinomial?

The following is an example of a perfect square.
q13.png
Notice that the square of half of the middle coefficient is the last term.

Let us take the equation q10.png. We have to rewrite this equation in the form of q12.png so that we can use the square root property.

These are the Steps in Solving Quadratic Equation by Completing the Square

Solve q10.png

Let's check if our answer is correct:

How about if (a) is not equal to 1?

q15.png

Summary of the steps in solving quadratic equation by completing the square:

  1. Rewrite the equation q16.png If a ≠ 1 divide both sides of the equation by a.

  2. Take half the coefficient of the x – term and square the result. Add the square to both sides of the equation.

  3. Factor the left side of the equation and simplify the right side.

  4. Apply the square root property.

Now try this!

hi sir @jorgehh.. I get your point .. it must be positive to have two real roots. but I'll just stick to the idea that b can also be negative and it also has two imaginary roots . thank you so much for dropping by sir..

math is my favorite subject
but i must admit i already forget those, hehe
thanks for sharing this

a hahaha....if I were not into this job @atongis ...I might have forgotten these things as well.
thanks for dropping by.

good thing you're a teacher, hehe
pwede next eh ung permutation & combination? hehe

grabe si maam @fabio2614 oyyy hahahah lahi rajod ang pag discuss ug math <3 I just remembered my tutorial sessions with my tutee. Hahahah

@namranna... tagbaw kog pangita sa square root sign aning math ba... hahaha dugay kaau mahuman ug type...any way math is life😅

But steemit is lifer? Hahahaha steem on mdzm!!! ❤️

i dont like maths.

i missed alot about maths
would love if u teach me

@mrposyble hahaha...its ok if you missed a lot of math any way you have lots of pinoy friends..added each day and soon be multiplied😅 ....kumusta

okay lang ma'am.

ikaw kamusta?

Hello @fabio2614, Very good and educational post. You're quite different you surprised me with these equations, hahahahaha. I think it's excellent that post as yours is multiplied in this community to inject a little knowledge and thus encourage personal growth. Greetings.

hi @julian2018 thank you for appreciating my post in math. I love to post topics like this but it's time consuming typing mathematical symbol....owst..

Nice. Looking forward for you to post more about mathematics, using quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations also. Best regards :)

Hi @barbiee ..done with quadratic formula..😊hmmmm you can check my post here.
