A Review Of Even Numbers

Even numbers are numbers where you can make pairs from. When you make pairs with even numbers there should be no leftovers. Everyone should have a partner.

For single digit numbers, even numbers include 2, 4, 6 and 8. For whole numbers that are 10 or above, even numbers end with a 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 (in the ones digit place).

Half Of Small Even Numbers

Given an even number you can determine half of that even number by asking yourself which number added by itself gives that even numbers. Refer to the examples below for more clarification.

Example One

What is half of 8?

A whole number (less than 8) added by itself to get 8 is 4. This is because 4 + 4 is equal to 8.

Example Two

What is half of 20?

A whole number (less than 20) added by itself to get 20 is 10. This is because 10 + 10 is equal to 20.

Example Three

What is half of 32?

Half of 32 is 16 as 16 + 16 does equal 32.

Half Of Larger Even Numbers By Using Expanded Form

--

For larger numbers such as 80, 128 and above it is a good idea to use expanded form to split the number into its smaller parts. Once the smaller parts are obtained, you can find half of each number and the halves together.

Example One

What is half of 86?

The number 86 in expanded form is 80 + 6. Half of 80 is 40 and half of 6 is 3. Adding the halves 40 and 3 together yields 43. The number 43 is half of 86 as 43 + 43 = 86.

Example Two

What is half of 242?

With this example the number 242 is a three digit number. In its expanded form, the number 242 is 200 + 40 + 2. Half of 200 is 100, half of 40 is 20 and half of 2 is 1. Adding the half parts together gives 100 + 20 + 1 = 121.

You can check 121 is indeed half of 242 as 121 + 121 = 242.

Example Three

What is half of 468?

Four hundred sixty-eight in expanded form is 400 + 60 + 8. Taking half of each number and adding the halves together gives 200 + 30 + 4 = 234.

Example Four

What is half of 1148?

Here we have a four digit number. Its expanded form is 1000 + 100 + 40 + 8. Taking half of each and adding them together gives 500 + 50 + 20 + 4 which is equal to 574.
