Problem Solving Made Easy (8th Grade)#2: How to find the slope of a line?

in #math7 years ago (edited)

"Solving math problems the easier way is intended to help students discover that learning math is easy. Be inspired and motivated with the hope it can sway them from having neutral opinions about math to liking it."

Hello friends. This math post discusses the steps on how to find the slope of the line that passes through the given point. If there shall be any novelty in this post, it will be in the manner in which the content is presented. Many textbooks treat some of these relationships as a simple mathematical fact of life. At the teachable moment, it’s nice to be able to give a curious student a straightforward explanation whenever needed.

By the way, this post is likely to be understood by a reader who has at least an 8th-grade education (age 13-14).

What is a slope?

Relating this to real life, a ladder, for example, is constructed to give people access to go up to another level of the building. Suppose there are two ladders to choose your way up, which ladder is easier to climb?

Now the steepness of the ladder is referred to as the slope of the line. In Mathematics, the slope of a line is a number that describes both the direction and the steepness of the line.

It is the ratio of change in "y" to change in "x" and is sometimes called the ratio of "rise" to "run". This measure is often denoted by the symbol "m". To determine the slope you can use the coordinates of any two points on the line, l4.png and l5.png.

How to find the slope of a line?

Simply use the formula : l12.png

Here are the steps in solving for the slope of a line:

  • Step 1: Identify two points on the line
  • Step 2: Assign which is to be l4.png and l5.png
  • Step 3: Substitute to the formula: l6.png

Application:

Problem:

Find the slope of the line passing through the points A( 2,3) and B(-3, -5), then Graph.

Solution:

  • Step 1: Identify two points on the line

A( 2,3) and B(-3, -5)

  • Step 2: Assign which is to be l4.png and l5.png

A (2, 3) as l4.png
and B(-3, -5) as l5.png
Note that it really doesn't matter which point we choose as Point 1 and Point 2

  • Step 3: Substitute to the formula: l6.png

l10.png

We now find the slope of the line which is l9.png.
Since we are also tasked to graph it, so here it is.

  • Graph (only if asked)

l11.png

Conclusion

The slope is positive l9.png. This means that the line slants 8 units up for every 5 units change to the right.

So we're done! That's how we find the slope of a line. See you next time.
