Squares As A Special Case Of Rectangles And Rhombuses
Hi there. This post features the square shape. A square is actually a special case of a rectangle and is a special case of a rhombus. Rectangles, rhombuses and squares belong to a class of two-dimensional four-sided shapes called quadrilaterals.

The Rectangle
A rectangle is a four sided shape where each of the four corners meet at a 90 degree (interior) angle (L-shape). The opposite sides of a rectangle are of equal length and are parallel. The side lengths next to each other are not equal though.

The Rhombus
The rhombus shape has four sides where the all the sides are equal. Opposite sides in a rhombus are parallel and the corners do not have to meet at a 90 degree angles. Angles opposite to each other ina diagonal fashion are of equal measure.

Squares As A Special Case Of A Rectangle & Rhombus
A square is a two-dimensional four sided shape where all the sides are equal, opposite sides are parallel and the lines meet at 90 degree angles at the corners.
The definition of the square matches the definitions for a rectangle and a rhombus. A square is a special case of a rectangle and also a special case of a rhombus.
In summary, squares can be considered a rectangle or a rhombus. However, a rhombus can never be a square and a rectangle can never be a square.
