The Master of Marketers, McDonalds in Panama.

Today Anabell and I are beginning our move to our new home and we had to pick up the keys from the real estate agent. The idea that we had to meet someone before 11am is new territory for us. So we agreed to meet the lady at McDonald's (pronounced MacDonald's here). I had not had an egg & cheese biscuit in years so I was prepared to order one but wait, what the hell? The biscuit breakfast sandwich was no where to be found. They had the egg Mcmuffin so I ordered that instead.

The funny part was the other options on the breakfast menu. They have an inverted bun, grill cheese sandwich for $1.50. I literally giggled but they are the kings of efficiency. You see McDonald's does a great job of marketing to the local economy. The first thing is that in Panama the median income is about $500 a month. Second Panamanians love anything with bread.

Marketing Takeaway.

Know your audience, don't try to market something to people that would not be interested in your product. This seems like common sense but you would be amazed at how many businesses fail because they thought they had a great idea but the real world gave them a beat down. Remember when Coca Cola tried to rebrand to Coke and changed the recipe? What a disaster!

Sort:

If you can offer customers what they want, you will win.
But to force the client to want what you have - the advertising move.
If there is no choice - you have to choose from what is.
And marketing is balancing between this all. :-)

Yeah, globalization is pretty important, these days. I'm reminded of one of the classic marketing examples... the Chevy Nova didn't play too well in Latin America because , you know... no va.

Being a global corporation is not easy. I sure would not want to be the head of marketing for a brand with physical products.

It's huge and massively important part of doing business. Back in "another life" I worked with globalization at Dell Computer... it's lots of seemingly little stuff. Like your cursor... that might become a pointing finger when you hover over a link? Yeah... that's "flipping the bird" in some cultures... so a total no-no in your software/firmware.

AFAIK, the Nova legend is an urban legend.

Prescient advice. @hilarski direct hit, Nice.
Recently, Google's demographic algo-ryhthms failed, due to being skewed and failing to match clients' customer base. Causing the recent pull away of big corporations from Google and Youtube. Ad revenue dropped dramatically.

I think they are just too big now. Like the Titanic trying to avoid the iceberg.

Nice advice :)

Nice post!

You should try the McKroket in Holland... oh wait don't, it's not vegan hahahah
