I'm not sure that the answer to the brainteaser is quite right? That method identifies the fastest horse... but not necessarily the 2nd and 3rd fastest... at least as I understand the question and the answer...
... now I need to think about it a bit more... but at first blush, I don't think it does...
Well, that was my fault! I only wanted to include the fastest as I thought adding the second and third would make it too difficult for everyone and I miswrote it.

Oh good! I was looking at it for a while and thinking that I didn't get it! Anyway, I'm pretty curious how you would find second and third without having to do the whole procedure again.
My initial thoughts are to race the winners again... Minus the 1st place one, which is replaced by the second place from that group of five.
