Coinmarketcap has an excellent "historical snapshot" tool that shows the value of coins by each week, going back several years. Take a look at coins that are climbing the chart. When a coin is gaining market cap faster than others, it's a great time to buy in.

How do I know? I invested in Stratis and Siacoin early on. Take a look at how many positions they have climbed.
